NEWSLETTER – Summer 2005
August 2^nd We have completed the building of our treehouse cottage, and are currently putting on the finishing touches. We stayed there this weekend to test it out for visitors (and because it was so much fun!) Our first guests are this Friday. The idea of a treehouse came about because of the great views the Log Cabin afforded of the surrounding trees from the second floor deck. After a couple of weekends of walking around Scenic Hill with a ladder, we finally found the location that offered the best views of the surrounding trees. We started construction on the treehouse in early June, laying 22 piers in concrete to raise us to the perfect elevation, 16 feet off the ground. The angle of this view lets you see into the treetops, and into the distant rolling hills peeking through the breaks in the trees. We had been gathering rough-cut cedar siding, and cedar logs for the posts and spindles of the railings. We acquainted ourselves with the local wood mill, and soon had a pile of cedar logs cut into halves and quarters. These were used for everything from window trim, to bathroom shelves, to the headboard for the bed. A wonderful local craftsman made us a custom cedar dining table and end tables to match the rest of the cottage. Decorating was easy, using antiqued pressed tins created by an artist friend of ours.
